So what is DDNS and who would use it?
In lament terms DDNS service maps a dynamic IP address to a hostname. Consumers will often using this service if you work remotely or like to have the ability to access your home network while you are away. This is not just for home. I am merely using it as an example. Someone would use this service because they don't have a static IP address. Static IPs are great because it does not change so you will always know what the IP address of your server will be. However they are costly. Because of the cost associate with having a static IP you will often see others use a FREE DDNS service. The reason is because dynamic IP address changes and you don't not know when or what it will change to. Therefore you register with a ddns provider like dyndns or no-ip.com to have them give you a hostname that maps to your IP. Meaning if your IP address should change it doesn't matter since you use a hostname which will be updated once the IP changes.
Note:
DDNS updates to IP address are not always instant and you may need to set the correct frequency. Be sure not to set it too frequent as the ddns provider might block your account.
Anyway, few weeks later that popup became really annoying on every login. Therefore I went to the ddlinkddns.com website and to my surprise right there in front of me on my screen was the reason for my (dlinklink/DynDNS account issue. It looks like if you don't verify your D-Link hardware by October 20. 2014 then your account will be removed. For myself, it was already too late therefore my account was one of the ones to be removed.
Therefore I had to create a new account to get access. I used the same username that I had and to my surprise I was able to sign back in using that account. Please note that I had use the serial number and mac address on my D-Link device to register a new account. I then created and new hostname and got my DynDns account working again.
But there was still some things that were puzzling. According the the FAQ section it looks like this service with dlinkddns.com will only last for 6-months. Information pulled from FAQ seciton:
- Following confirmation of this process, you can continue using your D-Link registered product without interruption. D-Link’s arrangement with Dyn provides you with a hostname and free dynamic DNS for the period specified for the product (generally up to six months). Where certain products include longer periods for the free service, your service will remain free for the extended period specified. You will receive a notice by email prior to the renewal date, if applicable.
